The story, “A Wall of Fire Rising” uses metaphors to illustrate the passing of hope between generations to seek freedom beyond the borders of Haiti. The message is conveyed through the father-son relationship of Guy and Little Guy. As an unemployed worker in a struggling society Guy lacks the opportunities to provide his family a better life. However, the sight of the hot air balloon brings new. Guy remarks, “Sometimes I just want to take that big balloon and ride it up in the air… keep floating until I got to a really nice plot of land where I can could be something new” (61). The imagery of flight is a metaphor of hope that inspires Guy to establish the belief of freedom exists beyond the skies of Haiti. The message is expressed through the painter Catherine and conveyed to the young girl, Princesses. Through As Catherine portraits she tries to captures the importance of light, “Without light, there is nothing. We might as well be blind people. No light no color” (116). Without light to open up a path in darkness, life becomes blinded to the existence of freedom. The context of light is as a symbol of hope, guiding the people blinded by oppressive rulings onto a path of freedom. Catherine's message inspires princess to establish her role in the greater movement towards freedom. By creating art princess realizes that she too can leave behind a legacy of hope. "It struck Princesses that this is why she wanted to make pictures, to have some thing to leave behind even after she was gone" (121). Pictures are a reflection of its creator, evoking generations of viewers to the same emotions and beliefs held by its creator.
