Hope In The Rent Collector

Hope is a feeling that is necessary to overcome difficult hardships or situations. In the novel, The Rent Collector, by Camron Wright, the main character, Sang Ly, uses hope in many difficult situations. Sang Ly displays hope when finding a cure for her son, gaining the knowledge to read and write and hope that one day she will be able to leave the dump. Sang Ly’s son Nisay’s illness causes her to have hope. Throughout the novel, Sang Ly visits many doctors and uses multiple medicines and treatments that only work temporarily. Sang Ly is discouraged by the results, but never gives up hope that one day her son may be cured. She continues to save up her money and tries anything that could help him. Finally, Sang Ly takes a long journey to her old town to visit the Healer. The Healer cures her son. If Sang Ly lost hope her son would have never been cured. This is important to the character’s future because she will not have to worry about her son being in pain or struggling with his illness any longer. …show more content…
While learning to read her husband, Ki Lim, was very doubtful that she would be able to learn. Sang Ly dedicates all her time to studying and reading. Many times throughout the novel her teacher does not show up. This does not stop her from reading or writing. In her everyday life, she looks for flyers and papers in the dump to analyze and read. This is important to Sang Lys future because she can now teach her son how to read and has an amazing skill that will stick with her for the rest of her life. This is also important to her future because this ability will help her be able to move out of the dump and provide a better life for her
