A quote by the Roman poet Horace says, “Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in Prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant.” In other words, Horace is saying that challenges bring out qualities in people that never would have come out otherwise. This topic is shown throughout all sorts of movies and books, but is this true in our own lives? I believe that adversity does end up with better results, but it’s because adversity pushes you to improve your previous results, and to prepare yourself for any upcoming challenges.

We can see this idea represented in history with people like Paul Revere. When he figured out that the British were coming to attack, he was able to warn the towns in the area, resulting in fewer injuries and deaths than would have occurred otherwise. Finally, one last example would be when Mary I, knowing that Protestantism was rising throughout Europe, promoted Catholicism, and imposed harsh laws surrounding Protestantism. Even though this wasn’t an example of anything good, the threat or challenge of Protestantism pushed Mary I to work harder by spreading her views, even though it ended up giving her the nickname Bloody Mary. As you’ve seen, adversity in the future can force us to work harder and prepare ourselves to face it.
Adversity pushes people to work harder, in order to improve upon themselves, or in order to achieve any of their goals. Examples of the positive effects of adversity have been shown all throughout history and is present in everyone’s lives. Summing up, Horace was partially true, because adversity does help us bring out sides of ourselves that we don’t really see otherwise, but instead of hidden talents, it shows our tenacity in achieving our
