Miner’s Article Review Ethnocentrism and cultural relativism are two cultures with no similarities. Ethnocentrism is the evaluation of other cultures according to their standards. Those of ethnocentrism believe they are better than other cultures. Cultural relativism is the principle of regarding the values, beliefs, and practices of other cultures. Cultural relativism also believes other cultures should be accepted for who they are. When reading the article Body Ritual among the Nacirema by Horace Miner, I see how both cultures tie into the article. Cultural relativism is based on the principles of one’s culture. While also believing cultures should be accepted for who they are. While reading the article I find their culture to be very different. I don’t agree with the way they perceive the human body or what they do with it. I am sure as others read the article they wouldn’t agree with it either. However, to them what they are doing is acceptable. This is how they live their lives from day to day. I see how we can fall into ethnocentrism more easily than cultural relativism. Every person has judged someone based on their ways of life or appearance. Every person at some point has felt they are better than someone else. As human beings we have all judged that one person from time to time. It is hard for us to except something that is out of the normal. I feel we have become more able to accept other cultures over time, but still judge them from time to time. If we all took a minute to learn about ones culture. We could easily be more cultural relativism.
