Horatio In Alan Gratz's 'Something Rotten'

Horatio Wilkes is a character that can be found in Something Rotten and Shakespeare's Hamlet. Alan Gratz, the author of Something Rotten, decided that Horatio was going to take on a bigger role than he had in Hamlet. This role had him not only in the majority of the book, but narrating the story to give a more or less bird's eye view of Hamilton’s crazy life. Horatio can be described in many ways as in his humor to fill a awkward situation, or how he is supportive and helpful, and another good trait Alan Gratz bestowed upon him is his loyalty to Hamilton and how through thick and thin would never leave his friend’s side.
Horatio is the comic relief of the story as noticed throughout the novel and not only keeps people from killing each other, it is also infectious to those around him. “Yeah.We’re all named Horatio, me and my six sisters,”(Grantz 31) this quote is from the will reading where Horatio is stuck between a drunk, angry kid and the murdering Uncle /Step-Father. Horatio also uses it to woo Olivia and it works too. He also uses this to help gain an outlet to let out how he really feels about the situation between the Princes and it's hard to get mad when no one knows if he is joking or not which can be seen in his response to Claude's innocence plea ”Clear as the Copenhagen River”(Gratz 185). Horatio is not only the narrator but a vital role in Something Rotten’s plot and the arrest of Claude, the murderer of Hamilton’s Father, and the claiming of the CEO position by Hamilton. Finally the character Horatio Wilkes is the only character capable of dealing with all of the turmoil caused in this book and can only survive through using his three most obvious
