It appears that it is nearly impossible for women to ever be equal to that of a man or even better than a man. Since we can remember women have always been the one to get paid less, do the house work, have and take care of the children, etc. Women have always been looked at by others as someone who is lesser and cannot manage the work of a man, yet men fear women in many ways. It’s like the only way for men to feel like they are better than women are for men to talk down of women and make them think and feel as though they really are less. The way our parents raise us, the people we are around, the city and state we live in, everything has an impact on who we become as an adult. This has a big part in the way Horney and Greer view the relationship between men and women. Horney talks about how a young girl and her relationship with her father impacts who she is. If he father is never there for her, she will grow to have trust issues with men. Same thing along the lines with boys, if they never have that woman figure in their life they will never know what to expect from a woman and will have trouble finding the perfect woman for him (3). Horney gives examples of different women who have different attitudes towards men because of their childhood. She gives an example of a woman who believes that there is no man who will treat her right and only wants her to fulfill his sexual desires, this type of woman had a rough and abusive childhood (3). “These are examples that demonstrates how the fundamental attitude of women toward men can be disturbed by childhood conflicts” (4). As for Greer, the way a man is raised has a huge impact on how they act. As mentioned, a boy must learn how to be a man and is told that he needs to learn to be tough. “The persistence of the expression ‘to make a man of [someone]’ is the best possible evidence of the deliberateness of the streamlining of the male person into the masculine man” (731).
