Hospital acquired infections (HAI) are contagions that patients get while receiving treatment for medical or surgical conditions. They are one of the leading causes of preventable deaths in the United States and are involved in a substantial increase in health care costs each year.

HCAI is acknowledged as the most frequent adverse event in health care, but the burden remains unknown because of the difficulty of gathering reliable data. The said evidenced can be backed up by the authors’ challenges on in getting an accurate estimate on the number of HAI and deaths as have been attributed in their study. For instance, they used over a decade older estimates for 2002 hospital wide surveillance in two areas – infection rate in well-baby nurseries
