Since the school board is considering because of the lack of value they think it provides, i strongly believe that fiction should be in the school’s curriculum. Not only do they provide great entertainment, they provide education and you can learn things that are going on with today's society from these fictional books. In the House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer this book deals with a lot of issues we have in today's society like power ,isolation, and compassion and forgiveness. I believe that novels are a life changing experience they can teach you so many things. They have so many thematic ideas that with issues we have in society today and in the past. It opens my eyes to new ideas new ways of thinking and that even though fiction books are fake they deal with real social issues. First and foremost fiction books are important and deal with events that are happening today or in the past. Power is one of the main themes throught the House of the Scorpions. It starts off with power because of how Matt was born. He was an experiment born from a cow and kept inside a house most of his life as property from a powerful drug lord from Mexico.
When Matt cuts his foot from broken window glass he is carried to go get it cleaned up. They notice he has writing on his foot that says “property of the Alacran estate.” Which tells us why Matt is kept away from the other kids. This tells us why Matt is treated with some much respect later on in the book because people fear the power of el Patron and do not want to disrespect his property. People crave power for many things, one of them is to create fear from other people and make themselves feel control. Matt has been a loner his entire life he has zero friends ,no parents all he really has is his caregiver assigned to him but when he gets comfortable to call Celia his mom he gets shut down and isn’t allowed to call her that. The only contact he has with the outside world is the television. Matt tried to make friends with the stuff animals in his room but after awhile his imagination his over and realizes they can’t talk to him. Some people are like Matt they are alone, they feel isolated from the world and have no one that's there for them. Isolated people think they can do everything by themselves they feel like they do need any help and try to find closure for themselves in their own ways. When Matt first encounters some of the kids outside of his house he doesn't how he to approach them. Due to him not having a lot people to talk to during childhood when he question by the kids he has no idea of what to say to them even basic small talk but as he gets comfortable around he learns to be more sociable. A lot of isolated people who are alone do not know how to socialize and make conversation and don’t socialize and go meet new people. After meeting those group of kids that event really changes Matt’s life for better. He learns how to talk and become more sociable. The theme of isolation in the book shows us of what Matt’s isolation changes him he no longer acts the same way he used to when he
