Immigration can cause many new challenges in your life. It can cause you to have to live a whole new lifestyle. “Don't be afraid to start over.” Esperanza is a girl who lives in Mexico and is very rich. Once her papa dies everything starts to fall apart. There house burned down and they had to move away because of her uncles. Now her family and Esperanza are immigrants in the United States. Now she has to work as a field worker. Being uprooted from where you know can be hard. Also, facing different challenges along the way can make being an immigrant very hard. Some big challenges that Esperanza has faced are when her Mama got sick with valley fever, she did not know how to do daily chores, and she faced discrimination in the United States. The first challenge Esperanza faced as an immigrant was when her Mama got sick with valley fever. It was common for new immigrants to get dust in their lungs because their bodies are not used to it. On page 161 the text states, “It was as if after all her hard work getting them there, her hard determined Mama had given up.” This quote shows that mama is getting sicker and sicker. Most mexicans faced discrimination because the americans thought they were dirty and not as useful. “The Mexicans can only swim in it on the afternoon before they clean it.” (page 221) The okies got a pool and they will only let the Mexicans swim in it before they clean it. They did this because they were considered dirty. On page 219 Miguel says, “They said they would work for half the money and the railroad hired them all.” This quote is when Miguel finally gets his dream job working on the railroad machine shop. When the okies came in and said they would work for half the money, the shop hired them all. Even though they did not know how to work a train. Then Miguel had to dig ditches all day. This is a challenge that really made Esperanza
