No one can argue that Ancient Greece is one of the best known ancient civilizations and for good reasons too. They were prosperous, their militaries were strong and they were the first form of democracy, even though they were divided city states and some valued military forces over democracy. The Ancient Greeks were not like other ancient civilizations, they did not have a lot of good farmland, which caused many wars, they lived in a mountainous region so they had to look towards the sea to survive and become prosperous. Ancient Greece was more famous for their breakthroughs in science, math, medicine, written history, drama and epics/poems. They were a polytheistic civilization and told stories of heroes. In some regions they did not have a democracy because they valued the military over all else, meaning they had to have someone in charge and would not let the people choose. Democracy was important in Ancient Greece because it set the bar for the form of government we have today. Athens was one of the more famous Ancient Greek city states who used democracy as their form of government although it was not like it is today. Only elite men whose parents were born in Athens were allowed to vote and make important decisions in their community (Doc V3). They could also vote to cast people out, banish them, from their city as well as elect to let them stay or run a part of the government (Doc V1). They came up with many ideas we use to this day but they could not unite the city states of Ancient Greece with democracy. This style of government often clashed with a military based government such as the Sparta had. They also divided their people in a social hierarchy- men at top, women and children below them and slaves below
