WW1 was a devastating event in all its time that it lasted, Four years, three months. The hypothesis is While the events of gallipoli should continue to be commemorated, there needs to be a greater focus on the significance of Australia’s involvement on the Western Front. The key points that I will be outlining are, what were the causes of World war 1, What were the reasons for Australia’s involvement in the war, Where did Australian soldiers fight and impacts of WW1 on the Australian society. These will be the main points surrounding the subject, of WW1 in all its glory and all its hollow ending for most.

When Britain declared war against Germany in August 1914, Australia, as a dominion of the British Empire, After four and a half months of training near Cairo, the Australians departed by ship for the Gallipoli peninsula, along with troops from New Zealand, Britain, and France. On 25 April 1915 the Australians landed at what became known as Anzac Cove, whereupon they established a tenuous foothold on the steep slopes above the beach. During the early days of the campaign the allies tried to break through Turkish lines, while the Turks tried to drive the allied troops off the peninsula. Attempts on both sides ended in failure and the ensuing stalemate continued for the remainder of 1915. In fact, the most successful operation of the campaign was the large-scale evacuation of troops on 19 and 20 December. As a result of a carefully planned deception operation, the Turks were unable to inflict more than a very few casualties on the retreating forces. This attack on Turkey was a strategical move by the triple entente to shorten the war, however it was highly devastating for the ANZAC troops. On the 25th of April 1915, the ANZACS arrived on the Turkish peninsula of Gallipoli. They were forced to struggled up steep cliffs under the waiting machine-gun fire of Turkish troops. When night fell the ANZACs had only made a few kilometers of land and lost two thousand three hundred men. The ANZACs soldiers remained in Gallipoli until the December of 1916. Throughout their time in Turkey they suffered enormous losses due to the modernized weapons of the Turks. Starting in March 1916 and continuing until November 1918 the Australians fought in the trenches along the Western front were heavy and gains were small. It was here that they sustained their highest casualties. In 1918 the Australians reached their peak of their fighting performance in the battle of hamel on 4 July. From 8 August they then took part in a series of decisive advances until Germany surrendered on 11 November. It advanced from the Swiss border in the south to the North Sea.
