The street known as Sunset Boulevard has been associated with Hollywood film productions since 1911. Film workers lived modestly in the rapidly growing neighborhood, but things went downhill during the 1920s profits and salaries rose to unprecedented levels. Billy Wilder living as young man in Berlin in the 1920s, was interested in American culture. Much of his interest for it was fueled by country films. Back in the late 1940s, many grand Hollywood houses remained on the streets, and Wilder found them to be part of his everyday life.
