Eating bugs and walking a total of twenty-one months describes Cabeza’s rough journey. On June 17, 1527 Cabeza sailed from the Spanish land with a group of six-hundred people to the Gulf of Mexico. This trip did not go well they started out with six-hundred people, then dropped to two-hundred fifty to eighty then to eighteen and ends up with only four people when they arrived to the Gulf of Mexico. You’re probably wondering how Cabeza De Vaca survived? Cabeza used the little things he had very wisely to survive the hard journey by knowing languages , resources for Indians, and the power of healing.

An important way Cabeza survived is using his intelligence to learn languages. Learning languages helped with easier trade so he could talk to them and be able to trade good things. It showed the Native Americans he wasn’t a threat to them and wasn’t going to hurt them in anyway. It helped him with food and water and shelter because they would shelter him and feed him while he was helping. The Native Americans would also give Cabeza directions if he needed something. Cabeza learned a total of four different languages and it helped with trust, easier trade, to show you are not a threat, to ask directions, and for food. (Document B)
