Elizabeth took hold of the realm at its most chaotic point, after the reign of her brother, who caused the people to riot and her sister who seized all who opposed the Catholic beliefs, the country was quite poor. After the war with Spain, England suffered tremendous debt. The obstruction in the economy over the period of her reign caused prices to increase ultimately leading the country into a severe depression. And although the term capitalism had not yet existed, the idea of free enterprise and private markets did. She believed in encouraging expeditions because of her own personal interests in seafaring. Elizabeth invested in many adventurers to pirate other countries ships, more specifically Spain’s. In 1572 Drake was commissioned two ships to sail to the Caribbean and plunder the Spaniard ports and retrieve their findings to England. Elizabeth commissioned a secret voyage led by Drake in the year of 1577; he traveled to the Pacific Coast of South America and destroyed several Spanish towns and ports. Along the journey he and his crew captured several ships bounty as well as named a town in the queen’s honor, it was named New Britain. The economy extorted with wealth and treasures, caused the queen the desire to establish permanent colonies in the New America. An ability to expand her nation further, she granted a royal charter to Sir Walter Raleigh for the purpose of exploring and establishing a colony in new land. This voyage was pursued in 1584 and is known today as the Roanoke Colony. Although it was unsuccessful it persuaded more expeditions with better financials. Elizabeth had strong ambitions to maintain trade and alliances with the Ottoman Empire; in 1581 she granted royal charter to the Turkey
