Jay Gatsby efforts to obtain the American dream were illegal, failed. He threw out the opportunity of meeting and working for the right people to gain the success and wealth.I believe the American dream represent hard work and dedication to goals and having an equal chance as everyone else to achieve it. Gatsby did not achieve my definition of the American dream because he worked hard even though it was illegal he did what he had to do and meet the right people to achieve his goals in life, which was to impress and get back Daisy, but gave up everything when he came to the realization that he had really lost Daisy. They all went to town and when they decided to go back, Tom decided to let Daisy go with Gatsby knowing that she would never leave him because the fact he had “old” money. Daisy was driving and seen Myrtle running out into the road she began to swerve into the oncoming traffic and decided to go back into the lane and hit her and killed her instantly and never stopped. By taking the blame for the death of Myrtle, he ultimately ended up dead by the hands of Myrtle's husband, George. The American dream was not achieved by Jay Gatsby because he didn’t completely experience the whole thing. The American dream is having true happiness in what you have achieved and what you have from being successful, even if you can’t get one thing you want. He dwelled over the fact he couldn’t get Daisy back. That held him back from continuing to reach his goals and get more successful.
