Often when we think of certain subjects like sports, music, or politics we can almost instantaneously pair these subjects to its most influential peoples that comes to our mind. Gloria Steinem is the person that comes to mind when thinking of subjects like feminism, political activism, and gender equality. She has been an icon of the women’s movement in the United States for decades and still is continuing to play a pivotal role in today’s movement.
Gloria Steinem has been an influential journalist in the late 60’s to the early 70’s, her first major piece was an expose on the poor working conditions and low pay wages of a Playboy Bunny which also featured a picture of her in the suit as a part of her article. This piece gave Gloria the spotlight and has been one of the most notable reports she has written as it is often brought up in interviews even after 50 years. Unfortunately feminists have had a bad reputation for being unattractive, unconventional, and having a hatred for men which is the opposite of what Gloria Steinem was. So as a response to her appearance many have questioned her popularity being a result of her good looks and in an interview she did with WTVJ's Joe Abrell where it is stated that, “she admits that her looks may have had a lot to do with her success as a leader in the women’s movement.” To her is did not matter how her success spawned as Gloria Steinem has exuded self-confidence throughout her career regardless of any naysayers. She has also taken pride in her age time and time again never trying to hide it which is what many women did and still do because it is primarily uncommon for women to have a positive outlook on aging.
