The answer is probably a lot more than you think. Movements like the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the Civil Rights Act, and the March on Washington are recognized today. During the Montgomery Bus Boycott African-Americans did not ride the bus, costing the city about $3000 a day for 381 days. (“Rosa Parks”) The March on Washington gathered 200,000 participants to march on the capital for jobs and freedom. Knowing Douglass’ intelligence and accomplishments, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott invited Frederick Douglass to be the only African-American at the Seneca Falls Convention for Women’s Rights. (“State of Oregon: Woman Suffrage - Frederick Douglass (1818-1895)”) Even though Douglass had to face harsh racism on a daily basis he managed to escape slavery and became an intelligent, respectful man. Frederick Douglas is remembered today for being able to escape slavery and educate himself to become a successful abolitionist.
