In the year 1606, the expedition to Virginia began. Three ships were sent to Virginia; the Susan Constant, the Discovery, and the Godspeed. Once settled, the colonists decided on Jamestown as the name, this was chosen because the King's name, James I. The settlement was by no means successful at first. The people of Jamestown started passing away from diseases and starvation. A man named John Rolfe had arrived at Jamestown with tobacco, the plant that would make Jamestown thrive. Jamestown had the most impact on the development of American history. Jamestown is important because it was the first permanent English settlement.
