Earlier today ended one of the greatest sagas of drama and the fight for one’s beliefs as, at 11:50am today, Mr. John Brown, one of the greatest abolitionist’s in American history, was pronounced dead after being hung in public in accordance to the decisions passed along by the jury in November earlier this year.The saga of John Brown, and the conflict that he caused within this nation, can be traced back to his actions between the dates of October 16-18th earlier this year when, along with 21 other men, he led a raid on the federal arsenal at Harper’s Ferry.The raid itself started on the 16th of October when Brown and his men decided to launch their attack on the arsenal. Early on in the attack, they met little to no resistance and were quickly able to make progress through the arsenal, soon capturing it entirely. During the chaos, the bridge to Harper’s Ferry, Brown’s only possible escape route, was captured, essentially rendering him and his men trapped and thus at the mercy of those besieging the arsenal. Eventually, Brown and his men were forced to retreat to the engine house of the arsenal, further pinning them down and dooming their situation.The following day, United States Marines, under the command of Lieutenant Commander Robert E. Lee, stormed the arsenal after orders to surrender had been refused by Brown and his men. During the storming of the building, ten of Brown’s men were killed and six more, along with Brown himself, were captured. On the second of November, Brown was tried for treason, convicted by the jury--who deliberated only for 45 minutes--and sentenced to hang. At 11am today, that saga of Brown’s actions finally came to an end. It can only be speculated now as to the reaches and effects of his actions upon this already divided
