On November 8, 1960 John Fitzgerald was elected as the 35th president of the United States. On November 22, 1963, Kennedy was shot and killed by the bullets of an assassin, in Dallas, Texas, making him the 4th assassinated president. He was the youngest president to have been elected, at the age of 43. Inaugurated January 20, 1961, he also became the 14th minority president and the nation’s first Roman-Catholic president. John F. Kennedy’s successor was Lyndon Baines Johnson and Kennedy was the successor to Republican President Dwight D. Eisenhower. John F. Kennedy made a huge impact on his country and the world around him. Kennedy’s contributions to society, we avoided nuclear war with the Soviet Union, by building a military blockade to prevent any future missiles from entering Cuba and because of Kennedy’s several negotiations with Nikita Khrushchev. This major crisis in October of 1962 was a major problem in the during the Cold War between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. It was a thirteen day-long dispute over Soviet missiles positioned in Cuba, only about 90 miles away from Florida. Before Kennedy’s inauguration, Kennedy was briefly informed of a plan by the CIA, which was developed during the Eisenhower administration, to train Cuban exiles for an invasion of Cuba. The plan was based off of the assumption that the Cuban people and Cuban military would support the invasion. “The ultimate goal was the overthrow of Fidel Castro and the establishment of a non-communist government friendly to the United States” (“The Bay of Pigs”) Responding to the failed Bay of Pigs Invasion, Khrushchev complied to Cuba’s request of positioning nuclear missiles in Cuba to prevent future harassment of Cuba.
