The Enlightenment was a philosophical movement that influenced new ideas and theories during the 18th century. The people centered their attention on ending the abuses of the church and state, and educating one’s self. Prior to the Enlightenment, the educational system consisted of very limited, male oriented studies. Before and during the Enlightenment was solely based on strict educational values and high levels of schooling ("Education In The Age Of Enlightenment"). Throughout this period, many philosophers were acknowledged because of their inspiring ideas on education. John Locke found all types of education of a child to be the most important part of their growth and development. He believed that no matter the gender, all children should be taught to grow with healthy circumstances. John Locke’s contributional books and documented thoughts affected and influenced the educational system during The Enlightenment.

Locke took a large step when publishing the idea of gender inequality in his book, Some Thoughts On Education ("Some Thoughts Concerning Education"). John Locke, unlike many philosophers, developed his thoughts based on ‘natural law’. He strongly lived by the idea that men were not corrupted, until war and ego. Therefore, Locke believed that men were born pure. Locke does not discriminate gender in his book, but actually enforces the rights for women to be properly educated.
