John Rawls was an American philosopher that was very influential to our current legal system. He created the concept of Justice as Fairness in early 1971 with his book A Theory of Justice. Rawls’ concept was influenced by the outbreak of the Vietnam War in the 60’s and how America’s political system was enforcing their military. He spoke out about the military actions and analyzed the many defects in the American political system. John Rawls was one of the firsts to significantly contribute to the study of ethics by using this theory and looking at, what he thought to be an unjust war, and considering how citizens could potentially resist their government’s aggressive policies and actions.
