How Did Junior Turn His Back On His People

How would you feel if everyone you have ever known thought of you as a trader to your people? This is exactly what happened to junior, the main character in Sherman Alexie's young adult novel the absolutely true diary of a part time Indian. Almost everyone on the Spokane Indian reservation thought Junior had turned his back on his own people. The tribe thought of Junior this way because he decided to go to a small town that was full of a mainly white population, right outside the reservation to go to school to get a better education then the schools on the reservation could provide. My paper will explain why Junior did not turn his back on his people.

Junior did not turn his back on his people. He is not a trader because he only wanted to get a better education and Mr.P helped him realize that to go somewhere in live he needed to get off the reservation. Junior did not want to end up dying of alcoholism like everyone else eventually does on the reservation. He wanted to go to Reardan, because he knew that the richer kids got more advantages in succeeding.junior knew if he went to Reardan he would have better success in life.

Almost all the people that lived on the spokane indian reservation though junior had betrayed them and chose white people over them. They all felt this way about him because he wanted to go to a school in town full of white farmers. Instead of a school on the reservation, because junior knew he would have a better chance of doing something with his life if he changed schools. The people on the reservation felt that Junior had picked the white people over them, they felt that he chose someone else over his own people. In the book Junior said “I figure that my fellow tribal members are going to torture me”. I think that this quote means that junior already knew that he was going to get picked on, but he did it
