Maya angelou was a civil rights activist that helped and changed the lives of many and the way people think. She was very inspiring and influential. Maya battled racism through her life and made literary history by being the first African-american woman to have a nonfiction best-selling book called I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings. Angelou received many honors in her career such as two NAACP awards for outstanding literary work (nonfiction) in the years 2005 and 2009. In Maya’s early years she was an author, dancer, screenwriter, actress, and a poet. She was born into a rough childhood and was split from her parents when she was very young. She always wanted to make a change in the world and with her many works of art she did. She made many inspiring stories and was inspired herself by the others around her. Being born and raised in a place where racism and segregation was common, she had much to think about as she wrote. Which she later decided to share with the world and made a drastic difference in our society today. She also changed the way we think of others. Maya Angelou promoted freedom from racism and inspired people to speak out through her works including I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, “Still I Rise”, and The Heart Of A Woman.
