All throughout history, war has always had a tendency to accelerate innovation and invention, and World War 1 was no exception. It was the peak of Industrialism and the mass production of deadly weapons. What we consider modern warfare today debuted in WW1. It mixed 19th century tactics with 20th century technology that would make it one of the deadliest wars yet. Millions died because military and civilian leaders were slow to adapt their old-fashioned strategies and tactics to the new weapons of 1914. New technology made war more horrible and more complex than ever before. The United States and other countries felt the effects of the war for years afterwards.The battlefield was a test bed for a range of new technologies that would forever change the nature of war.

World War I introduced machine guns, modern artillery, and airplanes to the battlefield. The machine gun came to dominate the battlefield and became an iconic symbol for WW1. It was the one of first automatic firearms introduced and its continued development helped enhanced military potential. By 1914 all major powers had furnished their armies with these deadly weapons.
