Patrick Henry
Patrick Henry was a very strong and powerful leader and politician in the late 1700s. He became famously known as a public speaker in 1700s during the movement for independence in Virginia following the Stamp Act in 1765 that caused the rise of taxes on paper goods in America. With many Americans angered, Patrick Henry decided to lead the opposition of the Stamp Act and at the meeting of the Virginia House of Burgesses, he proposed seven resolutions which of many were passed by the House of Burgesses. Henry was an antifederalist, which means he opposed the Constitution and argued that it endangered the states rights and the liberties of individuals; because of his oppositions and criticism towards the Constitution, it helped to the development of bill of rights and some amendments which we still use and follow today. A few weeks before the Revolutionary War, Henry states in one of his most famous speeches, "Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! — I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!". This is one of Patrick Henry’s most famous quotes. It means, that he will not settle until he has justice. In my opinion, I think he was loyal to his country and to his people but in today’s society, if he were to say “give me liberty or give me death,”, he might’ve been seen as a little egotistical, or like he had a big head for saying that and would been seen as ridiculous. On the other hand, Henry was a very powerful man with an enormous amount of wisdom and bravery which ultimately made him a very successful
