How Did Ponyboy Changed

In the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, Ponyboy experienced some changes both physically and mentally throughout the novel. However, parts of him remained the same. Will he stay the same or change? Ponyboy changed throughout the novel. In the first part of the novel Ponyboy thought Darry didn’t like him. Darry always yelled at him, and Ponyboy thought that he only liked Soda.When Darry arrived at the hospital Ponyboy’s whole view changed about Darry. Ponyboy said, “Darry did care about me, maybe as much as he cared about Soda, and because he cared he was trying too hard to make something of me.” At this point their relationship changed. When Johnny cut and bleached Ponyboy’s hair to change his appearance to help stay hidden from the police, Ponyboy was still the same inside. “It was my pride. It was long and silky, just like Soda’s, only a little redder. Our hair was tuff- we didn’t have to use much grease on it. Our hail labeled us greasers, too- it was our trademark. The one thing we were proud of.” Ponyboy would always be proud of who he was, a greaser, even if his hair was colored and cut. Also, Ponyboy remained a gang member with the some of the same behaviors. Even after Johnny’s and Dally’s deaths, Ponyboy would have fought the Socs if he needed to. When Ponyboy said, “I busted the end of my bottle and held on to the neck and tossed away my cigarette” it showed Two-Bit and Steve he would have used the cut bottle to defend himself or his fellow greasers. Finally, Ponyboy still realized that he needed to be “tough”. This is similar to the idea the author told the reader about the greasers in the beginning of the novel. Ponyboy stated, “ I knew as well as he did that if you got tough you didn’t get hurt. Get smart and nothing can touch you…” Ponyboy would fight for his friends and never give up the fact that he lived on the West
