Georges Bernanos once stated, “It’s a fine thing to rise above pride, but you must have pride in order to do so.” In other words, in order to be successful and achieve more than what you have you must have pride. Imperialism is the annexation of a country or area by a powerful country. The Age of New Imperialism began during the 1870’s in which European powers had planted great empires in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. During this time, racism played a big role as the European powers had encouraged slavery in Africa in which millions of individuals were taken for working reasons. Pride influenced China and Japan as their pride didn’t allow European powers to come, in which many disputes had occurred. Many individuals may believe that pride was more harmful than helpful due to all the disputes, in reality, pride was more helpful than harmful as it industrialized and modernized China and Japan. Pride influenced responses to imperialism in China and Japan as they helped out both countries in which it was done similarly. China’s imperialism was similar to imperialism in Japan as they both used similar strategies during their imperialism time period. For example, both China and Japan began as unindustrialized during the imperialism time period. During China’s imperialism the Open Door Policy allowed countries to have equal opportunities to trade with China in which they became industrialized. Countries or nations like British had made great trade with China which lead to them advancing in technology. Too much trade had caused an Opium War to break out between Britain and China as they had been illegally exporting Opium from India to China.
