From the origins of civilization, people looked to a high power for guidance and direction. Beginning with the Sumerians, Kings and their nobility looked to their polytheistic religious beliefs for direction through cosmic and terrestrial signs. Priests came into play, helping those who needed help in their walk with their faith. For the ancient and medieval era, religion was a companion to power but the nature of authority slightly changed, relying more on religion, in the modern period. Beginning in the ancient period, people had a say in how government ran but also, religion was a major occurrence in every day life. The ancient Egyptians did everything revolved around their beliefs. Large construction projects were being tackled including the start of the Great Pyramids. Many wanted to stick with Catholicism but seminal figures like Martin Luther and John Calvin brought it many different ideas. Catholicism versus Protestantism was the religious war at the time and Lutheranism and Calvanism were poking at Catholics across Europe. Indifference about beliefs were becoming larger and larger problems, many not knowing what to do. The Catholic church was trying to get involved, some members more than others. One example of this is the conflict is King Henry the VIII of England and his relationships with Charles V, the Holy Roman Emperor and King Francis of England. Henry was a pious Catholic. He was upset with the spread of Lutheranism and Calvanism. The idea of teaming with others to end it came to mind. Charles was also upset with Lutheranism and being the nephew of Henry’s first wife, Catherine of Aragon, Henry planned to unite the two together against the war on Catholicism.
