Columbus Day was made a federal holiday in 1937 by Franklin D. Roosevelt. Roosevelt was pressured to established this day from strong lobbying from the male-only Catholic organization known as the knight of Columbus. The knights of Columbus wanted there to be a prominent catholic role model in Americans history. Originally held on every October, but was changed to the second Monday in October in 1971. The Day itself celebrate and honor Christopher Columbus for discovering North American/ New World and also celebrates the Italian-American culture.
