It started out August 18, 1927, in Plains, Georgia. (Black) Rosalynn Carter was Wilburn Edgar Smith and Frances Allthea Murray child. (First) He was a hard-working, mechanic and farmer. She was a dressmaker and most importantly a mother. At the age of 13, Rosalynn Carter's father passed away. She became the second parent to her siblings. She also became a mechanic and hairdresser. (Black) She attended a local high school and graduated as her class's valedictorian. (Rosalynn) She met her husband Jimmy Carter in high school through a mutual friend. She enrolled at Georgia Southwestern College at Americus. She married Jimmy Carter on July 7, 1946, at Plains Methodist Church. (Black) They settled down in Norfolk, Virginia and had their first child: John William. They had three more children: James Earl III, born in Hawaii, Donnel Jeffery, born in Connecticut, and Amy Lynn, born in Georgia. They were born in different states because of Jimmy Carter's Naval Career, causing them to move all over the country. Carter entered politics in 1962, beginning in the Georgia Senate.
