The Holocaust began as an act of ethnic cleansing, (removal of ethnic or religious groups) and ended as one of the most horrific events in history. The Holocaust began in January of 1933 and ended in May of 1945. During the Holocaust more than six million Jews were slaughtered. Adolf Hitler,the Chancellor of Germany started the Holocaust because of his hatred towards the Jewish people and their religious beliefs. His desire to wipe out Jewish people lead to tens of thousands being tortured in concentration camps and killed in large groups in gas chambers. Although millions of Jewish people were killed during the Holocaust, some managed to escape.

Ruth Halbreich was one of the millions of Jews who lived through the Holocaust. Ruth and her family lived in a ghetto in Poland until Ruth was taken into Germany to become a slave laborer. Ruth explained that she enjoyed the idea of being put to work

The city was so hectic that Ruth barely managed to get out. However the American soldiers also bombed the city in which Ruth migrated to. When Ruth left the city that she had been staying in for a year, the other women followed her. They all stayed together in the basement of an old building. When one day the door was open and Ruth could hear English. Ruth came out of the basement and approached an American soldier who just happened to be Jewish. Ruth then explained that she was also Jewish and had no place to stay. So the American soldier took Ruth to a nearby hotel. This hotel happened to be where all the American soldiers had been staying. The American soldier then removed a Hebrew prayer book from his back pocket and handed it to Ruth. However because Ruth was so excited she froze and couldn’t read one word of Hebrew. Ruth explained to the American soldier that she knows how to speak Jewish but at this very moment she wasn’t able
