The Conscription Crisis of 1917 had negatively impacted the relationship between the French and English Canadians but positively impacted Canada’s identity by supporting Canada in World War I to victory with more men. The success in World War I later gained Canada recognition in the world as more than a dominion of Great Britain.
The Conscription Debate 1917
Robert Borden had introduced conscription which caused the conscription debate. The French Canadians opposed strongly while most of the English Canadian supported. The debate was fierce over conscription and divided the French and English Canadian furthermore. Conscription would increase support in the Canadian army and bring Canada closer to towards autonomy
