"Fifteen miles on the Erie Canal." These words are from a song that is about the Erie Canal, a canal that changed America and changed the course of America's history. The Erie Canal's construction began in 1817 and was finished in 1525. Stretching for 363 miles, 40 feet wide, and 4 feet deep, it is a man made marvel. The Erie Canal created the America that all Americans know and love today. Without the canal America would not be what it is today. The Erie Canal had changed America in big ways. Although the Erie Canal changed America in a million ways, the most important were the change in transportation, New York expanding, and business/revenue grew.

It connects to all Americans because it gave women rights that they have to day and African Americans the freedom that they have today, also made white people realize that everyone is equal. The big lesson that was learned was that every ones is equal and always will be. The significance of the Erie Canal was that it helped the North during the Civil War, giving them the advantage, allowing them to defeat the South, freeing all slaves and giving women their rights.
