From 1800 to 1850, our country was home of many battles. Expansion was the quest for most of them during this time period which was the main impact on our unity. The Louisiana Purchase, the Mexican War and also the buying of the Oregon territory took place. The Louisiana Purchase was the number one major event of Jefferson’s administration of the nation. Our country purchased 827,987 miles of land from France for nearly fifteen million dollars. The Louisiana Purchase between the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains region all the way to the Gulf of Mexico to the Canadian Border. The US’s economic resources strengthened. Those living on the west side of the Appalachian Mountains exported their grown goods by boats on the river that led to the Gulf. National unity weakened as more and more territories were added to the United States. Over time issues began arising over the governing how-to’s of the newly purchased land. David Wilmot from Pennsylvania proposed the Wilmot Proviso which meant that the new areas and territories from Mexico would be free states and not slave-states. It passed in the House but not the Senate. In 1850, the bill was passed called the Compromise of 1850 which was hoped for by the Northern and Southern parts of the US. When it became time for separating the territories by state names, compromising was in route. We called this time the Compromise of 1850. During this time the country was nearly even with the slave vs. free ration, until we added California which was a tip to the balance. Popular sovereignty would decide slavery or not for new territories that were added to the unity. Then the Fugitive Slave Law was passed which meant that slave trade was now legally outlawed.
