This allowed the Puritans to use different methods to collect evidence that supported their idea that there were witches and devils in Massachusetts. One proclamation that the Puritans gave to the residents was that “It was perhaps their original design to gratify a love of notoriety or the mischief by creating...Excitement in their neighborhood...there can be no doubt that they were great actors”( Charles W. Upham Document G). Generally speaking, the Puritans were accusing different people that they were witches or devils because of their actions.
