The Watergate Scandal is usually defined as “a political scandal that occurred in the United States in the 1970s as a result of the June 17, 1972, break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate office complex in Washington, D.C., and the Nixon administration's attempted cover-up of its involvement.” The Watergate Scandal broke out on June 17, 1972 when numerous burglars were arrested inside the office of the Democratic National Committee, situated in the Watergate building in Washington D.C. Although, it wasn’t a conventional robbery, the intruders were connected to President Richard Nixon reelection campaign, and they had been trapped struggling to wiretap phones and steal classified documents. Some of Nixon’s aides were not so fortunate as they were condemned of very serious offenses and sent to federal prison. Nixon himself never self-confessed to any criminal misconduct, though he did acknowledge using deprived judgment. His abuse of presidential power had a undesirable effect on American political life, creating an atmosphere of pessimism and disbelief. While many Americans had been deeply disheartened by the consequences of the Vietnam War, Watergate added further dissatisfaction in a national climate already fermented by the complications and losses of the past decade.
