The Great War which is also called as The First World War and The Great European War, was occurred between 1914 and 1918 and the theatre of war was mainly at continent. Even though it did not have any impact on Australia, Australian men joined up to the war with New Zealanders to help the British Empire. The Australian army which included New Zealanders was called Australian Imperial Force (AIF). One of the famous facts is the operation of landing on Gallipoli. Australians still remember it as a legend of the war and celebrate it. Also, there was not any other voluntary army except AIF, so at that time, Australia had unusual war experience that to support British Empire as a volunteer. As it was mentioned in previous paragraph, most white Australians’ ancestors came from Britain. It might make Australians to have an affinity to Britain. Perhaps Australians thought Britain as a sort of home country. In other words, they might have identified that they are descendants of British, but this reason may make obscure identities and weak loyalty to the British Empire. However, there are some facts of Australians had strong loyalty to her. For example:
Ritual expression of the need to be loyal to the British Empire took the form of Empire Day, celebrated in lavish fashion by the public schools as well as government schools (Crotty, 2001, p.82).
The Australians’ loyalty to the British Empire may have not been personal and even it made by government. Thus, Australians’ loyalty to the British Empire was common and public, and Australian identity that to be a part of Britain had been made among that situation. These could have led Australia to join up to the Great War as supporting the British
