The Call of the Wild by Jack London, is an extremely intriguing and descriptive book about a dog named Buck, and the hardships and rapid changes he goes through when he is kidnapped to become a sled dog during the Alaska Gold rush. Buck is introduced to a new and harsh environment. His social interactions change as he is a victim of harsh treatment and abuse. His actions towards others change as he loses loved ones. These all support the idea that you can change ones personality or behavior by changing their environment or social interactions.

In the story, Buck is taken from his home and from the people he grew up with. This changes his behavior because he was taken from the only people he trusted at the time, so he feels compromised. “And Buck was truly a red-eyed devil, as he drew himself together for the spring, hair bristling, mouth foaming, a mad glitter in his blood-shot eyes.” This shows that Buck is furious because he feels compromised, so he is trying to defend himself for his survival. “His madness knew no caution. A dozen times he charged.” This shows how Bucks behavior and actions change when he taken from the people he cares about. Buck also is treated poorly by inexperienced people. After he has learned respect for humans, he is given to people who treat him harshly. This makes Buck change his behavior towards them. “He refused to stir. So greatly had he suffered, and so far gone was he, that the blows did not hurt much.” This shows how Buck is changing his behavior in a rebellious way. “And through it all Buck staggered along at the head of the team…when he could no longer pull. He fell down and remained down till blows from whip or club drove him to his feet again.” This shows how Buck is being treated and how he no longer cares. His behavior is changing from the treatment of the inexperienced people. Another event that happens that changes Bucks actions and behavior is when John Thornton dies and causes Buck to become wild. John Thornton was a great companion that Buck loved greatly, but when he dies, Buck is furious. “A live hurricane of fury, hurling himself upon them in a frenzy to destroy.” This text explains how Bucks actions make him want revenge and blood. “And he knew John Thornton was dead.
