Michelle and Harper both agree here by being the bigger person, the town of Maycomb went low to discriminate Tom so Atticus went high and defended him through the trial, Mr. Ewell went low to spit on Atticus but Atticus went high and didn’t say a word back, and Mrs. Dubose was low to be the crabby mean lady that she is and Atticus went high by being kind to her. Harper Lee suggests through Atticus Finch’s character that it is a person's responsibility to stand up for others, be humble, and be kind. As human beings we are morally responsible to stand up for others as shown through Atticus. Scout tells us, “Miss Stephanie said Atticus didn’t bat an eye, just took out his handkerchief and wiped his face and stood there and let Mr. Ewell call him names wild horses could not bring her to repeat”(292). Mr. Ewell spit in Atticus’ face because he is defending Tom and Mr. Ewell doesn’t agree with Atticus doing what he’s doing. After he spits in Atticus’ face Atticus could have said some words to him but he stayed humble, turned the other cheek, wiped his face, and left.
