At no time ever say it’s too late to learn until the day you die.” This is a quote written by an unknown person, however, this quote relates to the story “Flowers For Algernon” because Charlie Gordon is a 37 year old who has mental disabilities, and all Charlie wants to do is learn, and feel equal to other people. In this story Charlie has an operation done to increase his intelligence because if this operation is works he believes it will make him have more friends and a better life. However after the operation he begins to lose friends, becomes depressed and ends up more st than he first was. In this story Daniel Keyes uses Foreshadowing to show Charlie's affection on wanting to learn. Charlie attends a night school to try to gain a higher IQ. Therefore, Charlie has the chance to have an operation that will increase his intelligence dramatically. “I hope they use me, Miss. Kinnian says it will make me smart” (Keyes). For example, when Charlie gets back to his lab he finds out that “Algernon isn’t eating by himself, they are now feeding Algernon, who also refuses to work on the shifting-lock problems.”(Keyes) ( one of the animals who was tested on before any other human to see if the operation would work) . This quote illustrates that when Charlie’s operation starts to wear off he will become more dumb than he used to be. Later that day when Charlie gets back to his lab he starts working, Charlie stays in his lab for almost 3 days straight trying to figure out what has gone wrong during the operation to see why it is only temporary. When Charlie comes up with a conclusion he figures out that he will start to forget everything including what has happened to
