Edgar Allan Poe was an adept writer who used the literary device of setting to create a dark, threatening tone in his short story, “Tell Tale Heart”. One of the literary devices Poe used often and was masterful at was Mood and Atmosphere. Shown on page 538 when the murderer (the narrator) crept into the old man's room at midnight with a dark lantern watching him. By doing this Poe makes the reader unsettled at the thought of someone watching them while they sleep. Another example is when the narrator described how “death” had stalked into the bedroom his shadow enveloping the old man as the narrator was getting closer to killing him, this can make people weary of the dark
