Edgar Allan Poe used the literary devices of elapsed time, man-made geography, and time of the day to make his story scarier. Added to his being insane and being an unreliable narrator. Edgar Allan Poe used the literary device of man-made geography by making the victim be murdered in his own room (Page 538:2) which many would consider their rooms amongst the safest places in the world, unless of course you are being stalked by a demented man who wants to murder you. He also uses this element on (Page 538:2) when he tells us how he covered the whole lantern except the part that would shine on his eye. Over here in Puerto Rico you wouldn't be able to do that because lanterns are pretty non existent in Puerto Rico. Another use of man-made geography in the story is how he buried the man under the house on page (Page 539:3) in most parts of America and Puerto Rico house floors are cement made meaning it would be impossible for him to bury this victim under the house. Poe uses elapsed time when he tells us (Page 539:2) how the victim would stalk the old man for hours every night. He also uses this literary device when he tells us that he spent and hour opening the door to the old man’s room just to stalk him (Page 538:2.) He did this to make sure the old man didn't wake up and he could stalk him calmly, when in reality one could open a door quietly in maybe a minute and that been slow. Another case of the use of this element is when he places a chair on top of where the body had been hidden and starts hearing the pounding of the heart (Page 539:3) and he tells us that it felt like years when it was actually a few minutes the time he was sitting there.
