In the story, “The Masque of the Red Death” written by Edgar Allan Poe, Poe uses symbols that function in the work and in what they reveal about the characters or the themes of the story. Poe uses people, objects, and events in his story that symbolize other things. Poe’s use of the prince, the clock, and the stranger teaches people that even powerful people cannot escape death; when their time comes, they will die. The symbols Poe used in his story teaches lessons and also adds more meaning to the story. All symbols have different meanings, just like everything Poe used represented something else. All the symbols Poe used contribute to the theme that man cannot control death.
