During the Holocaust, which took place in World War II, the Jewish people could not believe what was happening around them. Often they would use self deception, or lie to themselves, to make it seem like what was happening was not actually happening. Elie Wiesel described what times were like during the Holocaust in his book, Night. The Jews showed self deception before being captured, while being trapped in the ghettos, and in their time spent at the camps. Before they were captured, the Jews used self deception to ignore what was happening around them. It was a lie they told themselves to feel safer and like life was normal. On the transport day, it was hot and the Jews were not given water so when they finally got to go and leave many of the Jews just told themselves that they were going home or on vacation. Finally they thought the Nazis were sending them somewhere far from their homes for their own good or two keep them safe. All of these are ways the Jews used self deception in the ghetto.
While they were at the camps, the Jews used self deception to keep themselves alive.
Before they were even at the camps, the Jews ignored all the warnings from Mrs. Schachter who had visions of what the camps would be like. The Jews ignored and beat her because they were scared it was true. At the camps Elie used the thoughts of his mother and sister being alive to help give him hope, but secretly he had know that they would die. One last example is when the
Jews would think that they would be released one day. After seeing the way that they were treated the more they said that to themselves the less they believed it each day.
Overall the Jewish people lied to themselves to try to avoid the horrible reality of their situation. They tried to escape it in their minds but couldn't. Before the war, while staying in
