How Does Elie's Identity Change

“The look in his eyes, as they stared into mine, has never left me,” stated Elie Wiesel, explaining that how he looked after the Holocaust was unforgettable and devastating. (Pg. 109) He had went through a drastic physical change. However, Elie had also changed emotionally and through his faith. Over the course of Night, Elie’s identity changed inside and out. Elie’s faith contributed to his identity changing. “Why, but why should I bless Him,” questioned Elie. (Pg. 64) This shows that he started having doubts about God. Before the Holocaust, Elie prayed every day. As time passed and the Holocaust occurred, the praying slowly stopped. In the book, it says, “This day I had ceased to plead… I was the accuser, God the accused.” (Pg. 65) From this, we see that Elie felt like God had betrayed him and the Jews. After the praying did not stop the Jews from being punished, he decided to just give up. In Night, it also says, “I no longer accepted God’s silence. Elie said, “Toward the middle of January, my right foot began to swell because of the cold.” (Pg. 74) This shows that his body was starting to change from all of the torture and the traveling. Before the Holocaust, he was in good physical health. Unfortunately, events during the Holocaust caused him to suffer. Also, his foot being swelled shows emotional pain occurring within him because he physically got hurt. “From the depths of the mirror, a corpse gazed back at me,” Elie stated. (Pg. 109) This shows that his whole body didn’t look like him anymore. It is saying that his body literally looked like a dead body due to all of the abuse he had went through with the Nazis, such as being beaten, traveling long distances, and not eating.
