Northanger Abbey centers around social class and marriage. Northanger Abbey was published in 1818. Jane Austen, the author, thought highly of women.Social class genre ended up being an important part of the book. Catherine, the main character, dealt with social class and a love triangle. The novel takes a big role in this genre. Austen has this imagination that she lets out while she is writing any book.
One of Austen’s main themes is the use of social class. She got invited to go to family estate(“Northanger Abbey”). The things that went on everyone had an equal opportunity for the most part. So it was a fair ground(Austen 147). “She had a thin awkward figure, sallow skin without colour, dark lank hair and strong features”(Austen 1). She stood out. Everyone thought of her to be a weird individual. She didn’t care what people thought of her. Mr. Allen was always trying to make Catherine learn etiquette before she went out in public. It was important that women could dress, walk, and even how they walked. Catherine didn’t mind him helping her not make a fool out of her self. She didn’t want to be judged for doing something incorrectly(“Northanger Abbey Theme of Love”). “She was fond of all boys’ plays, and greatly prefered cricket not merely to dolls”(Austen 1). She wanted to be different that was the plan for Jane when she wrote most of her story’s. She would rather hang around boys. Adults in that time thought that was odd. The reason they thought that was because girls should hangout with girls. Boys should hang out with boys. Social class is about who you run around with and who people see you with.
