How Does John Updike Use Literary Devices In A & P

In John Updike’s short story “A&P” the author highlights a scene, set in the 1950’s, where “In walks these three girls in nothing but bathing suits.” (Updike) The narrator is a 19-year-old boy, named Sammy, fresh out of high school with a great interest in every move these girls make. The author uses an array of literary devices to convey a sense of rebellion against conformity. As soon as the girls enter the grocery store all male attention shifts to them. This is due to the oddity of them wearing only bathing suits in a place where it is though of as “indecent” to not be fully clothed. Their presence alone is enough to throw off the usual flow of the store and gains them stares and second glances wherever they go.
