“Mother to Son,” by Langston Hughes uses figurative language to convey the theme of not to give up, keep trying, and go on even when life is too hard. The poem shows how a mother telling a son that life is hard, but keep on going since life isn’t easy, but you’ll still have to persevere even though it’s hard. In the essay, metaphors are used to help reveal the theme of how life isn’t easy. An example of a metaphor would be, “Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.” (2 &20) This quote is comparing life to being hard and not easy as going up stair. Another figurative language, tone, is also shown to reveal how life can be hard, and that we shouldn’t give up and keep on trying. According to the quote, “So boy, don’t you turn back,” “Don’t you set down on the steps.” (14 & 15) You can’t turn back in life you have to preserve, and you can’t stop since they’re no going back. According to the quote, “Don’t you fall now- For I’se still goin’, honey, I’se still climbin’,.” (18-20) The mother tells the son not to give up since if she can persevere, he should also be able to keep on going also. …show more content…
As shown through the quote, “Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.” (2 &20) Our life is not just some breeze walk up the stairs, it comes with obstacles, hardships, and holes that makes our walk in life not as easy. According to the quote, “It’s had tacks in it, And splinters, And boards torn up, And places with no carpet on the floor-Bare.” (3-7) The quotes shows how life can be bad and empty with many difficulties. Even though life may be empty and bad we shouldn’t give up since we can still go
