According to Harper Lee, courage is the determination to fight for what is right, despite inevitable failure. Harper Lee conveys this aspect of courage through the actions of Mrs. Dubose and Atticus. Mrs. Dubose is determined to overcome her drug addiction, despite the imminent death. She takes on an overwhelming challenge and does not give up, she does not accept defeat. Atticus considers Mrs. Dubose as the bravest person he ever knew. In addition, Atticus is courageous. Atticus fights for Tom Robinson's innocence, even though Atticus knows he will lose the case. Atticus shows his courage by not backing down, in spite of the inescapable fate. Atticus faces many insults and threats, but he still continues to defend Tom Robinson. A mockingbird is an innocent bird, that only does good. Killing a mockingbird is a terrible act, and according to Atticus and Miss Maudie, it is a sin. Tom Robinson can be compared to a mockingbird. All he does is help Mayella, he is harmless. Although Tom Robinson is innocent, he is convicted wrongfully which ultimately leads to his death. Tom Robinson's death is nefarious and not acceptable.
